Founded in 1888, the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina is the oldest cultural and scientific institution in the country with a long tradition in different fields of research. With its four departments of archeology, ethnology, natural sciences and library, and a conservation lab, the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina furthers science through research as well as through an academic and institutional development. Its purpose is to connect Bosnian and Herzegovinian past, present and future by collecting, interpreting, displaying and preserving over three million artifacts.

From 1898 the Museum has an outstanding continuous publishing activity making the Herald of the National Museum the oldest scientific journal in the country. Limited number of issues can be viewed here. The Museum also exchanges publications with over 400 other museums and institutions worldwide.

The National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina successfully navigated many challenges during the 1990s (Bosnian war 1992-1995) and the 2000s (when the Museum was closed for three years due to political and economic reasons). After the Bosnian war, the Museum faced severe cuts in funding and staff making the transition into new era even more challenging (with more than 100 employees before the Bosnian war, the Museum now operates with 40).

Despite these unfavorable circumstances, the National Museum fostered collaborative educational and research projects between academic and non-academic sectors as well as between disciplines and professionals. In 2016, the Museum and its workers had been awarded the Europa Nostra Grand Prix for dedicated service. In 2017, the Sarajevo Haggadah was inscribed to the UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register as a result of a close collaboration between the National Museum, the French Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the UNESCO.

With an astonishing history behind it, the National Museum continues to be the most important cultural and scientific institution in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
